Government criticised as unemployment figures continue to rise

Sinn Féin Cllr.Brendan Mansfield has sharply criticised
The Government’s inaction on job creation in West Waterford, after the latest figures from
The Central Statistics Office showed that unemployment has risen from
5.1% to 6.7% in the third quarter of this year. Cllr. Mansfield called on
The Government to introduce a back to education scheme for young
Construction workers.

“This Government ignored all the warning signs that the economy was
Heading for a slowdown and failed to prepare for the recession even
Though all the economic indicators pointed to such inevitability. The
Result of all of this can clearly be seen in today’s announcement from
The CSO.

“The government cannot continue to sit on their hands in the face of
Rising unemployment in Dungarvan, 453 extra people are now on unemployment benefit in the town, an increase from 906 in October 2007 to 1359 in October 2008. Even now as the figures continue to rise there is
no evidence of any action or plan from the government to tackle
Unemployment. We have lost major industries in this town going back as far as the 1980's and successive governments have ignored the town and West Waterford area.

“It is essential that the state introduces a specific back to education
Scheme for construction sector workers under the age of 25 without
Leaving Certificates. The Taoiseach’s Department estimates that under
25s represent 50.3% of the total construction unemployment figure in
2007 & 2008 and that a large majority do not have a Leaving Certificate.
It is also essential that training and up skilling courses for
Alternative industries to construction are provided.”
